Cameras
and Film
J.P. Bell's
black and white photography is produced primarily with Hasselblad
cameras which produce 2 1/4" square negatives. This format provides
superior negatives for printing in the darkroom. The portability
of the medium format system as compared to larger format view cameras
allows for more creative camera positions and shooting styles. On
occasions, Bell uses an old 4x5" Speed Graphic with a modern Schneider
135mm lens. For some types of black and white photography, especially
on photojournalistic assignments, Nikon 35 mm cameras and lenses
are preferred. Ilford HP5 Plus, Ilford FP4 Plus, and Kodak Tri-X
are his black white films of preference.
Bell's color
photography is produced with 35 mm Nikons and transparency film,
primarily Fuji Velvia. If the color photography is intended for
photomurals, color negative film will be employed with medium format
cameras.
Black
and White Prints
J.P. Bell's exhibition quality black and white prints are produced
at this time on Ilford Multigrade IV fiber base paper. The prints
are archivally processed and selenium toned for longevity. Prints
for display are dry mounted on Bright White acid free board. Framed
prints are overmatted with the same Bright White acid free board.
(See The Fine Art Photographic Print.)
Photographic
Murals
Photographic murals are oversized prints which may be either color
or black and white. These images, depending on the transparency
or negative type, are printed on either color or resin coated black
and white paper. (See Photographic Murals.)
